Troubleshooting network connections using your WAN IP address (Wide Area Network IP) is an effective way to isolate internet issues. Your WAN IP is the public address assigned to your router by your Internet Service Provider (ISP), serving as your gateway to the global internet.

The primary goal of using your WAN IP for troubleshooting is to determine whether a connection failure is occurring on your Local Area Network (LAN) or outside your home on the ISP’s external network. Step 1: Locate Your WAN IP Address

Before troubleshooting, you must find your true external IP address.

From inside your network: Open an internet browser and visit a public tracking tool like WhatIsMyIP or search “what is my IP” on Google.

From your router’s interface: Log into your router’s admin gateway (usually 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1). Check the Status or WAN/Internet tab to find the IP assigned to your internet port. Step 2: Diagnose the Connection Issue

Once you have your WAN IP, use standard network commands to pinpoint the bottleneck. Open your computer’s Command Prompt (Windows) or Terminal (Mac/Linux) to run these tests.
